The light fixture was installed in 1987. I thought t12 was outdated so i am totally confused. T8 tubes are simply 1 inch in diameter versus the 1 5 inch diameter of t12 tubes. T8 lighting tends to be more expensive and have a shorter lifespan of around 15 000 hours.

Both t8 and t12 lamps use a g13 base. The smaller t5 and t8 tubes use less energy and have less mercury in them than t12 bulbs. The previous bulb was 20 watt and i think it was 2 ft. On the most basic level the t12 and the t8 bulbs have a different diameter tube thickness.
